Glasgow is not only a fantastic city to visit, it is also ideally
located as the gateway to the rest of Scotland. With easy access to the
motorway network you can explore everything Scotland has to offer from
majestic castles to breath-taking landscapes. Not to be missed on a trip
to Scotland is Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, with some
of the most spectacular views in the country you will not be
disappointed. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, then the Glenfinnan
Viaduct, which was the Hogwarts Express in the film, is not to be missed
in Fort William.
If you keep heading north, the Isle of Skye is
an island off the west coast known for its rugged landscapes,
picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles, on your way there
don’t forget to stop off at Eilean Donan Castle. Now no trip to
Scotland would be complete without a visit to Loch Ness to see, if you
can discover the Loch Ness Monster. Or for fans of the iconic British
movie series, »James Bond« the mountain scenes from the recent »SkyFall«
movie with Judi Dench and Daniel Craig were filmed in Glencoe near to
Glasgow.
Easily accessible from Glasgow is also the stunning Stirling Castle
and Wallace Monument. This monument is dedicated to Scottish hero
William Wallace. Mel Gibson played the character of William Wallace in
the Hollywood movie »Braveheart«. Edinburgh Castle can easily be
explored from Glasgow also either by coach in around 80 minutes or by
train in around 60 minutes. A once in a lifetime experience is also a
short flight from Glasgow Airport to the scenic Scottish island of
Barra. The arrival in Barra is the highlight of the trip, the aircraft
actually lands on the sand – the beach is the runway!
Since the
introduction of a now daily flight connection between the financial
metropolis of Frankfurt am Main and Glasgow in May 2018, Lufthansa has
strongly emphasized the importance and validity of the largest city in
Scotland as the ideal starting point for traveling to the north of the
British Isle. In addition to the already existing Lufthansa connection
from Munich five days a week, the subsidiary Eurowings also serves the
route from Düsseldorf to Glasgow. In addition there are almost daily
flights from Berlin with EasyJet or Ryanair connecting the river Spree
with the river Clyde.
The airport in the west of the city dates back to the year 1932,
initially had primarily to perform military tasks, and in 1966 moved a
few miles to its current location for capacity reasons. Queen Elizabeth
II officially opened it in June of that year, after the first regular
flight landed from the Scottish capital Edinburgh a month earlier.
Initially, however, allowed was only intra-British and intra-European
air traffic. This did not change until the mid-1980s. Since then,
Glasgow Airport has been experiencing a steady boom and can now offer a
considerable route network and traffic with high growth rates.
The
great range of car hire and the convenient location of the motorway
also provide ideal conditions for a continuation of the journey to the
many fascinating and attractive cultural attractions of the country. Of
course, the city of Glasgow itself has plenty to offer. Buchanan Street
is considered to be a shopper’s paradise, George Square is throbbing
with life and the architectural gems of the ingenious architect Charles
Rennie Mackintosh are well worth a visit, as is Kelvingrove Art Gallery
& Museum, the University, Glasgow Cathedral or directly on the
shores of the river Clyde the Science Centre, the Riverside Museum and
the new Clydeside Distillery.
