National Piping Centre – Glasgow

von Wilfried Klöpping

The National Piping Centre which was established in 1996, and officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998, is an international centre of excellence for the study of the Highland Bagpipe. It offers tutoring in piping to the highest levels, which includes a BA in Traditional Music in conjunction with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The Centre does more than teach. It also houses the Museum of Piping, which displays bagpipes from Scotland, Ireland and mainland Europe. It also offers a 10 minute film (in English) about the history of the Highland bagpipe and its music.

The Centre offers the facility for groups (minimum 5, maximum 20, although larger groups can be accommodated) to visit the Centre for „Come and Try“ sessions, which provide an opportunity to tour the Museum, and to try to play the bagpipes, along with a talk about and a demonstration of the bagpipes. Visits to „Come and Try“ can be added to lunch and dinner at the Centre’s Restaurant, and prices per person are available on request. There is also a small hotel attached to the centre, with 7 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom. The Centre also runs an annual festival called Piping Live! It usually features over 150 events, from pipe bands, to top class solo players, as well as traditional music groups.
