I am Gillian Beaton, Marketing Manager for The Royal Yacht Britannia.
We welcome approximately 300,000 visitors a year and were rated
Scotland’s Best Attraction by VisitScotland for ten years’ running. Our
visitors enjoy a self-guided tour of the ship with an audio handset,
which is available in 27 different languages, including German, British
Sign Language tablet and Braille Script. This captivating tour covers Britannia’s
five main decks all of which are fully accessible. You will discover
what life was like on board The Queen’s floating royal residence and
follow in the footsteps of world leaders.
There are so many fascinating highlights on board Britannia. Here are a few of my favourite places.
The
State Drawing Room was the setting for official functions, but also a
private sanctuary for the Royal Family when they were off duty where
they could converse and play games. The Queen once said of Britannia,
‚This is where I can truly relax‘. When you enter the Royal Apartments,
you can understand why. The calm, elegant design feels more like a
country house than a floating palace. The focal point of the room is the
elegant baby grand piano which has been played by the likes of Princess
Diana, Princess Margaret and Sir Noël Coward.
Britannia
is truly unique and is the only former Royal residence where you are
able to view one of Her Majesty’s Bedrooms. The Honeymoon Suite was
used for four Royal honeymoons, including Prince Charles and Princess
Diana’s. Her Majesty’s favourite room on board was the Sun Lounge and
this informal room was where The Queen and her family would enjoy
breakfast and afternoon tea.
One of the most magnificent rooms is
The State Dining Room which hosted many famous guests including
Churchill, Mandela, Reagan, Clinton and Yeltsin. Around the walls many
exotic gifts given to The Queen, as she travelled around the world on
official visits are on display. Today, we host prestigious evening
events in the State Apartments. Memorable dinners and drinks receptions
can be held, all are executed to the same high standards that were in
place when the Yacht was in Royal service.
Britannia is often referred to as
two ships in one. The magnificent State Apartments and Royal Family’s
living quarters are serene and elegant to the stern of the Royal Yacht.
In stark contrast, forward of the ship’s funnel, was a functional Royal
Navy vessel, where crew and operational equipment were located in
cramped conditions. Moving from one to the other was like entering a
different world. I recommend stopping off at the NAAFi. This was once
the original on board shop for Britannia’s crew and visitors can now
sample and buy our home-made fudge here. Perfect for a sweet treat!
If
you visit the Royal Sailing Exhibition you can view the former ocean
racing yacht Bloodhound. (Please note that Bloodhound is not on display
in July and August, she is based in Oban and available for private
charter during this period.)
We are here to help you. Britannia’s
