Angus is a small county with a big heart on the east coast of Scotland and surrounding the city of Dundee. Natural heritage is a big feature of Angus. Country parks, bird sanctuaries, hill walks in the glens (valleys) at the foothills of the Cairngorm National Park or the sandy beaches along the River Tay, the longest river in Scotland, or bays bordering on the North Sea, can suit all abilities. On any walking expedition, you will wonder at the diverse species of flora and fauna. Depending on how active you want to be, there are guided walking tours in June in the Angus glens of Clova, Isla and Prosen. Often at the end of the week, if you still have the energy, you might find yourself joining in a Scottish Ceildh! Glen Esk tours are by land rover driven by game keepers who are well versed in the best places to see golden eagles and other species unique to Scotland.
Angus, known as the birthplace of Scotland, is steeped in history. Glamis Castle appears like a fairy tale castle at the end of a tree lined avenue. It is believed to be one of the settings for Macbeth – the >Scottish play< by William Shakespeare. Many touring companies use the grounds for their productions during the summer months. Carved Pictish standing stones can be found by the road side as well as in museums. Ancient earth houses are a feature of the area. Brechin Cathedral has wonderful stained glass and you can walk around the atmospheric ruins of Arbroath Abbey, and discover more about the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1320.
Golf has also been played in this part of Scotland for over 450 years. With over 30 courses, all conveniently located in and around Angus and Dundee, it is the ideal choice for a golfing break. Choose from famous championship links such as Montrose or Panmure, or experience some of the finest inland courses such as Edzell or Forfar. The Open will take place at Carnoustie in 2018.
Do you love good food and drink? Angus is the home of Aberdeen Angus beef, Arbroath smokies, delicious strawberries and raspberries and even artisan vodka, gin and craft beer. You can sample the fresh local produce of Angus at the many restaurants, cafes, farm shops or farmers’ markets.
