My favourite marina

Set in a man-made lagoon, Portavadie Marina is one of the UK's most modern marinas and my favourite marina. Sitting on the shores of Loch Fyne on Scotland's wild and rugged west coast, we offer sheltered berthing and stunning purpose-built facilities. We were recently awarded 'Five Gold Anchors', making us one of only two marinas in Scotland to join this elite group. We like to think we have catered for most guests' potential requirements (there is even a family bathroom equipped with TV). After a day on the water, berth-holders can come ashore for our award-winning restaurants and bars, beauty and wellbeing and comfortable accommodation. Our marina is the gateway to some of the best sailing waters in the world, and the stunning scenery provides a fabulous backdrop. Secluded islands, protective hills, deep water, silent anchorages, relaxed tides, no crowds and plenty of wildlife: this really is sailing at its best. With natural harbours, sheltered beaches, tidal narrows and good shore-side facilities all in easy reach, a whole season could easily be spent exploring this area, while the entrance to the Crinan Canal at nearby Ardrishaig opens up the west coast and islands beyond.

Many of the local hotels, including the The Colintraive, Tighnabruaich, Royal an Lochan and Kames, have dedicated visitor moorings. Martin Lawrence, author of the highly regarded Imray Yachtsman's Pilots, recorded the Oystercatcher Inn at Otter Ferry as one of Yachting Monthly's Best Waterside Pubs. Nearby Tighnabruaich is steeped in sailing history. It was a boat-building centre in the early 20th century. Local men, Chester and Duncan Currie, skippered and crewed J-Class yachts including Endeavour and Velsheda, built in the 1930s and still racing today. The area has seen three prestigious Fife Classic Yacht Regattas in recent years and the Kyles of Bute Sailing Club has a calendar of racing events.

With its sheltered waters, the Kyles of Bute is perfect for dinghy sailing training. Tighnabruaich Sailing School has been teaching people to sail here for over 40 years and has built a reputation for providing the highest standards of sailing instruction. It provides courses for adults and children, beginners and improvers. We welcome short and long-term berthing, so whether you are looking for somewhere to park your boat overnight, for a week or over winter, Portavadie Marina will suit you. Our friendly and experienced marina team will be on hand to provide advice on the best cruising grounds, show you the facilities and services on offer and generally help you out wherever they can.
